Read the number correctly
The calculator estimates compacted asphalt material. It intentionally leaves out excavation, base, delivery, labor, equipment, and permits so you can see what the mix itself contributes to a quote.
Asphalt calculator formula
An asphalt calculator converts paved area into compacted volume, then weight. Start with length × width. Multiply by compacted thickness in feet, then density, and divide pounds by 2,000:
A 20 × 20-foot driveway at 3 inches has 100 cubic feet of volume. At 145 lb/ft³: 7.25 tons before allowances and about 7.8 tons after 5% waste plus 3% field compaction.
Density is the assumption people most often miss. Hot mix is commonly estimated near 145 lb/ft³, but an approved job mix may differ. Use a supplier’s density when available. Measure irregular paving as separate rectangles and add quantities. Curves, widening, and handwork can justify more waste.
Asphalt coverage calculator
Thickness changes coverage in direct proportion. One ton covers twice as much area at 2 inches as it does at 4 inches. These values use compacted hot mix at 145 lb/ft³ and exclude waste.

Asphalt driveway cost calculator
Installed prices are often discussed per square foot, but that figure hides the project structure. For early planning, a straightforward replacement or new driveway may fall around $5–$12 per square foot. Small jobs, difficult access, excavation, drainage, base repair, curbs, or premium finishes can cost more.
Separate material, trucking, preparation, placement, and extras. A 400 ft² driveway at 3 inches needs about 7.8 tons. At $90–$160 per ton, hot-mix material is roughly $700–$1,250. Installation also includes mobilization, removal, grading, aggregate, and crew time.
Soft soil, poor drainage, and failed aggregate must be corrected first.

Thickness is not a substitute for a stable base. These compacted depths are estimating starts; soil, traffic, climate, and local specifications should determine the final pavement section.

Asphalt is placed in compacted lifts. A 6-inch design may be built in two courses rather than one thick pass. Ask whether a quote states loose or compacted depth, whether thickness is average or minimum, and whether heavy-use areas receive a different section.

The state selector uses a material-only range for early budgets. Asphalt must arrive hot enough to compact, so plant distance matters. Nearby producers, full truckloads, common mixes, and flexible schedules generally cost less than small specialty orders with long hauls.

Connected voids let water drain through the surface into a specially designed stone reservoir. It is a stormwater system, not simply a different top layer, and needs careful subgrade, overflow, and maintenance design.
Quote verification
Use the asphalt calculator to compare quantity first. If a contractor’s tonnage is higher, ask whether the quote includes thicker sections, leveling, irregular geometry, or a larger field allowance. A thoughtful answer is more valuable than forcing every bid to match the calculator.
Next compare scope line by line. The lowest number may omit excavation, aggregate base, tack coat, drainage, edge support, utility adjustments, striping, or cleanup. At 3 inches compacted and 145 lb/ft³, one square foot uses about 0.0181 ton, so one ton covers roughly 55 square feet. At 2 inches it covers about 83 square feet; at 4 inches, about 41 square feet.
